What dangers are living in your carpet?

The dangers that are in your carpet come from many different sources.  Some we are responsible for and others, well we are still responsible for but we are unaware that we have them.

I tell myself every time I get my carpets professionally cleaned I am going to do as they do in Japan....all people must take off their shoes before coming into my house.  They do this because they sit on the floor and eat....that is the tradition.

I am writing about this because I was shopping today and watched a man spit right where my driver side door is.  WHAT!!!  I try to look at the positive and be thankful for what I have...so I am thankful I SAW THIS.  I avoided the "spit" on the ground while getting into my car but all the way home I couldn't stop thinking about it.  I wondered what would have happened if I hadn't watched him do this?

Then...it got serious.  How many times have I NOT watched this happen?  I went about my business, stopped at a few more store and came home.  I grabbed my bags, phone, purse and other items from my car that needed to go inside.  I placed the bags on the counter and unloaded my groceries.  I walked into my bedroom and placed my purse on my door knob (because I KNOW how many germs are on purses).  WAIT!  I always take care of making sure my purse NEVER touches my kitchen counters, NEVER touches the carpet and NEVER touches my kitchen table......I remembered the man who spit my my door.

How many times have I walked on someone else's spit and then walked into my home? This will drive a person crazy and if you have OCD (guilty) this will drive me insane each and every day.

So I hit the Internet and I'm not quite sure I like what I'm reading:
"Saliva hosts a variety of diseases and infections. Spit contains your DNA, thus autoimmune diseases and bacteria are highly contagious in spit, as spit serves as a transit vessel from one host to the next. Spit that carries such infections must penetrate the body somehow and reach the bloodstream such as via an open sore, mouth or even an eye, in order to become deadly. Viruses such as meningitis are also easily transferable through spit. Other germs, such as the common cold and influenza, are significantly prevalent diseases spread by saliva."  By Brennan Bennett, eHow Contributor  (read more HERE)

This is just crazy!!  Meningitis is easily transferable through spit!!!  I think about all the times I have sat on my carpet.  I think about all the times that "Five Second" rule has come into play at my house.  Then I think about all those out there who have babies who are just learning to crawl or the ones who start out on their blanket and than roll over to the carpet.

My mind is spinning!!  I'm wondering....is it offensive to ask guests to remove their shoes when entering my home? Please let me know what you think.
